Project description

Poster design series showcasing a postcard for each month in Japan. The series focuses on using my own photography and observations, cultural references, and capturing seasonal changes and scenery. Each postcard reflects unique atmospheres, cities and locations in Japan all inspired by Japanese aesthetics.

JUNE

The postcard for June features the gardens of Hasedera Temple in the historic coastal town of Kamakura. The city served as the political capital of Japan between 1185 –1333.

The postcard for May features the iconic Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak at 3,766 meters. The active volcano is one of Japan’s most famous and beloved landmarks.

APRIL

April’s postcard features a bicycle overlooking the clear turquoise waters of Zamami. This small island group lies just west of Okinawa’s main island and is known for their breathtaking beaches.

The poster takes inspiration from Japanese stamps and topographic maps reflecting the hills on the islands.

February’s postcard features Tsutenkaku Tower in Osaka’s Shinsekai district. The vibrant colors and motion reflect Osaka’s bold and energetic energy. The title typography is inspired by the iconic Shinsekai entrance sign found in the area.

January’s postcard features the Yasaka Pagoda, a landmark in the traditional Higashiyama district in Kyoto. The motion of the surrounding buildings and trees symbolizes how the pagoda has stood for centuries, while the world around it evolves.

OCTOBER

October’s postcard showcases the Shisa, a traditional Ryukyuan guardian statue. Shisas are usually placed in pairs, one to protect against evil and one to keep good spirits in. They are found all over Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands, being an important part of the culture.

The postcard from Japan for August depicts the Okinawan traditional dance Eisa. Potholes decorated with the Eisa dance is found throughout the city of Uruma and is used as an element on the poster.
